2015: Third year of the model that debuted for 2013.
2016: Mild updates to front end and cabin.
2017: All-new generation CX-5 with similar dimensions.
2018: 2.5L-4 gains cylinder deactivation, standard blind spot and rear cross traffic monitors, more active safety equipment became optional. Last year for the 2L engine and manual transmission.
2019: Turbo 2.5L-4 introduced, the iOS-Android cellphone interface offered. Revised braking and suspension. Turbodiesel finally introduced.
2020: Improved refinement due to enhanced sound proofing. Signature trim gains a 360 degree camera system and as well as front and rear parking sensors.
2021: Last year for the front-wheel drive variant. Eight inch infotainment screen standard. Kuro and 100th Anniversary editions were new for 2021.
2022: Late model cycle update includes a stouter structure and revised suspension mounts stated to improve ride quality and enhance refinement.
2017 and later model is a vision of restrained elegance outside and conservative chic inside. Clear gauges and logical climate controls. Mazda’s roto-wheel infotainment interface not universally appreciated but is easier to manipulate while driving than a touch screen. While not as roomy as some XXL competitors, the CX-5 easily welcomes four large adults and cargo space is big enough for those who have not forgotten how to pack properly. One of the nicest driving vehicles in its segment. The mainstream 2.5L engine is strong, smooth and flexible. The 2.5L turbo is designed to provide linear, non-dramatic speed and succeeds, however, it is neither as smooth or quiet as the normally-aspirated engine. Turbodiesel, only offered for 2019, is smooth and torquey but sold in very small numbers. Steering and handling are very dynamic for this segment while the ride is resiliently firm rather than plush. Firmer ride on higher trim models with larger wheels and lower profile tires.
Unlimited mileage warranties (three years basic and five year powertrain) starting in 2015. Few complaints regarding the CX-5. The non-turbo engine (s) and conventional, hydraulic, automatic transmission, favour long-term durability. Some 2.5L engines can consume oil, checking your oil between changes is advisable. The viscous coupling in the rear-wheel drive differential can fail. Brakes can wear prematurely, disassemble and clean the brake calipers and guide pins annually to extend service life of the components. Fragile windshield. If the transmission exhibits function faults or triggers a a warning light, check the transmission control modules for corrosion before replacing the transmission. 2016-2018 models, sunlight could cause small fissures in the infotainment screen.
Engine (small leak possible from the timing chain cover), rear shocks (leaks or premature wear; check them before the warranty expires), rear suspension (small clunks; check the upper strut mount, $40 for the part and about as half hour labour), rear disc brakes (corrosion). The low-profile tires on premium trims wear quickly and are expensive to replace.
Seven years warranty on the body starting in 2015. Fragile paint: check the hood, the tailgate and the roof and repair any stone chips; the Soul Red Mica paint seems to lack durability. Applying a clear wrap to the hood and lower body to protect the paint.
Recall: 2015-2016: the tailgate struts could corrode and detach, leading to potential injury. Correction: Replace the struts.
|
Recall: 2018-2019: a defective fuel pump could stop working and could cause irregular engine function, an inability to start, stalling, and/or trigger a warning light. Correction: replace to fuel pump.
