Volvo XC40 2025
Our 2025 model year review is in progress.
There are no changes of note for the XC40 in 2025. The full-electric XC40, formerly known as the XC40 Recharge, has been rebranded as the EX40.
Design wise, the XC40 is unlike any other Volvo model. That said, it is attractive enough and is a space-efficient envelope. Inside, the XC40 is, with a dash with a large, vertically-oriented touch screen, follows current Volvo cabin design themes. The gear selector and the touch screen are difficult to engage with. Luckily, the voice command system works well and can help the driver avoid interacting with the screen. The very vertical side profile delivers good width at shoulder height and the large windows further enhance the feeling of spaciousness. The comfortable front seats combine with good legroom to keep front occupants very happy. The rear seat is less supportive but legroom is reasonable, though rear passengers note that the bottom of the front seat backs rub against their shins. Trunk space is ample and deep below the window line.
The sole gasoline version of the XC40 is the B5 powered by a 2L turbo four that combines with a 48 volt electrical system to produce 247 total system horsepower. While not the last word in serenity, the B5 powertrain is strong, flexible and economical and curses the owner by needing premium fuel. The auto stop-start system re-engages smoothly. Though light, the steering is precise and holds its line well on the highway. Handling is reassuring. The XC40’s ride is firm but resilient and protects occupants from road shocks. Braking is strong with little lost motion from the brake pedal.
The base version, the Core, with heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a power tailgate and rear parking sonar, is nicely equipped. Moving up to the Plus trim adds leather seats, a dual-panel sunroof, a power passenger seat, an Orrefors crystal shift knob, and a 360 degree camera system. The range-topping Ultimate trim includes adaptive cruise control, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats and a Harman-Kardon audio system. The fact that active cruise control is only offered on the top model of the XC40 is disappointing for a firm that built its reputation on safety.
Insufficient data. Predicted issues include the typical electrical issues common to Volvos. The short four year powertrain warranty would make leasing a good idea. If you buy for the long term, a comprehensive extended warranty from Volvo Canada would be prudent.
