Toyota Prius 2025

Our 2025 review

Prius: The Prius is exclusively all-wheel drive for 2025. PHEV: The Prime name suffix has been replaced by a new Plug-In hybrid tag.

The Prius powertrain combines the efforts of a 2L four and electric motors to create 196 total system horsepower. Acceleration has morphed from slow to brisk. Toyota has retired its proven Nickel-Metal-Hydride batter pack in favour of a Lithium-ion one. Drive is by a CVT to the front wheels, with the rear wheels driven by a rear-mounted electric motor. The driver faces a high-mounted digital gauge pod. The slimline, horizontally-arrayed dash is highlighted by a large infotainment screen that sits atop its centre. The screen has a knob for on-off-volume and the climate control is manipulated by an array of physical push buttons. The rest of the cabin looks tastefully fashion-forward rather than the sci-fi look some makers go for. Room is good upfront but rear seat legroom is tight for a car this size and headroom is not abundant. The Prime sends its 220 horsepower to the front wheels via an electronic CVT. However, delivery times for the Prime are so long as to make the car a showroom phantom.

The Prius is exclusively all-wheel drive this year. The base XLE trim, with a comprehensive active safety suite, blind spot monitors, a wireless version of the iOS-Android cellphone interface, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats and power front seats, is nicely equipped. The Limited trim adds wireless cellphone charging, self parking, a power tailgate, a JBL-branded audio system, a 12.3 inch infotainment screen, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats and a fixed glass roof panel with an electric sun blind.

PHEV: The base SE trim, with a full active safety suite, is reasonably equipped. The XSE trim adds a fixed-glass rood, a front cross traffic monitors, a 12.3 inch infotainment screen, heated rear seats and a 12.3 inch infotainment screen. The XSE Premium ups the content with a JBL-branded audio system, a 360 degree camera system and ventilated front seats.

The PHEV was previously eligible for government rebates but those were suspended early in 2025.

Good reliability predicted.
