Subaru Forester 2025
The 2025 Forester is all new.
Based on the same platform as the Impreza-Crosstrek, the Forester is new for 2025. Subaru has announced a hybrid version of the Forester which twins Subaru’s engine and drivetrain with Toyota’s hybrid system.
The powertrain of the new-generation of the new Forester, a 2.5L flat-four hooked up to a CVT sending power to all four wheels, is unchanged. Though power appears modest, performance is good and the Forester seems no slower than the lighter Crosstrek that uses the same engine. The new Forester is quite a bit quieter than its predecessor and is really very refined now. Steering is nicely geared and holds its line well on the highway but feels vague. Like other Subarus, the Forester’s ride is very supple and handling is very steady. Braking is strong with good pedal feel. Visibility, long a Forester hallmark, is superior. Air conditioner performance is excellent and the Harman-Kardon audio system in our Premier test car was very pleasing.
The exterior style of the Forester is all new but oh-so-familiar. The cabin is all new and many cabin elements, like much of the dashboard and infotainment screen, is taken from the related Crosstrek. The driver faces a conventional, crisply-marked gauge package which is separated by a clear digital readout. The centre of the dashboard is dominated by a massive touch screen. The screen controls a lot of diverse functions including the auto-stop-start, climate distribution and fan speed. Physical controls are employed for temperature, rear defrost, full windshield defrost and audio volume and tuning. The front seats in the Forester are large and comfortable. The resolutely vertical sides of the Forester enhance cabin width at shoulder level and its immense windows impart a great feeling of spaciousness. The rear seat is very supportive and legroom is impressive. Our Premier trim test car, with perforated leather and Alcantare trim, looks and feels very luxurious. Typical for Subaru, the cargo area lacks depth below the window line.
The base Convenience trim, with the iOS-Android cellphone invoice, L.E.D. headlights, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, a lane keep assist system, alloy wheels and heated front seats, is nicely equipped. Moving up the the Touring model adds blind spot and rear cross traffic monitors, a wireless version of the iOS-Android cellphone interface, wireless cellphone charging, a power tailgate, a large format sunroof, reverse auto braking, a power driver’s seat and a heated steering wheel. The Sport trim is essentially an appearance package but does add a Harman-Kardon audio system. The Limited model includes leather upholstery, navigations, a heated rear seat and a power passenger seat. The Premier range-topper ups the feature contents with a 360 degree camera system, leather and Alcantara seating, ventilated front seats and a number of trim accents that result in a luxurious cabin.
The Forester is new but its powertrain is long established. Higher than average reliability predicted. High routine service costs and brakes can wear quickly and be expensive to renew.
