Nissan Frontier 2025

Our 2025 model year review.

The Frontier undergoes a plethora of minor updates for 2025. A longer wheelbase version of the PRO-4X, the EL, is new as is a PRO-4X variant of the King Cab. The Frontier gets new front fascias and the King Cab PRO-4X version gets new fender flares. All trims gain a telescopic steering wheel and power lumbar adjustments for the driver’s seat. A terrain view monitor works until 19 kilometers per hour. The SL and PRO-4X gains a four-way power passenger seat, a 360 degree camera system and wireless cellphone charging. All trims now feature a 12.3 inch infotainment screen. Wireless iOS-Android cellphone interface is standard on the SV and SL trims. Navigation is standard on the SL, and Pro-4X deluxe.

The Frontier is essentially the same size as competitors like the Ford Ranger, the Canyon and Colorado from GM and the Toyota Tacoma. Most Frontiers are crewcabs but a King Cab body style is offered in the PRO-4X trim. The King Cab and the shorter crewcab are built on the the same 3200 mm wheelbase. Five and six foot cargo bed lengths are available

Front suspension is by coil springs but the rear is held up by leaf springs. The 3.8L-V6 is rated at 310 horsepower and is hooked up to a conventional nine-speed automatic transmission. An on-demand all-wheel drive system is standard on all models. The V6 is smooth and relatively quiet, but its output feels less than 310 horsepower Nissan claims it produces. Fuel consumption is similar to full-size pickups. other vehicles in its class. The rear leaf springs are designed for heavy-duty work which leads to a turbulent ride on poor surfaces. The Frontier jostles its occupants on rough roads. The steering lacks feel, is heavy at low speeds but lightens up as speeds progress.

The Frontier is attractive enough for what it is, a pickup. The cabin is a very conservative design with reasonable ergonomics. The climate controls are placed a bit low for easy access and visibility but does use practical push buttons. The driver faces large, clear, conventional gauges. The big centrally-mounted infotainment screen is equipped with a number of buttons and knobs for the navigation and audio system. The steering wheel controls are a bit fiddly to operate. The rear seat backrest is very vertical and legroom is tight for a vehicle so large.

A vast array of Frontier variants are offered.

The King Cab, offered only in PRO-4X trim, is nicely equipped with a comprehensive active safety suite. Moving from the3 PRO-4X King Cab toe the PRO-4X crewcab costs $3600. The SL adds leather seats, a Fender-branded audio system, a sunroof, navigation and a 360 degree camera system.

The big issue with the Frontier and the other midsize trucks is that prices have escalated so sharply over the last few years that makers have essentially left mainstream buyers behind.

Too few Frontiers have been sold to evaluate reliability. Traditional Nissan problems include weak ball joints, air conditioner failures and minor electrical failures.
