Mazda CX-5 2025
Our 2025 review.
No changes of note for the CX-5’s NINTH year on the market.
The CX-5 is getting very old in design terms but still looks contemporary and Mazda’s near continuous tinkering with the vehicle has kept it fresh. Although many competitors have become very large, the CX-5 has retained dimensions that are sufficient to welcome four large adults but trim enough to be a very usable vehicle in the city. Typical for Mazda, the CX-5 is one of the most engaging vehicles to drive in its segment. The non-turbo 2.5L four is smooth, quick and flexible. The 2.5L turbo delivers strong performance in a linear fashion but its soundtrack is a bit unpleasant. The six-speed automatic transmission in the CX-5 operates seamlessly and proves that six gears are more than enough. Ride is firm but resilient and more comfortable in base models with smaller wheels and tires. Precise steering and steady handling. Braking is strong but brake feel is soft.
Overly complex and overlapping model range should be culled without anyone noticing. The base GX trim, with a comprehensive active safety suite, active cruise control, heated front seats, L.E.D. headlights and rain-sense wipers, is well equipped. The GS adds a power tailgate, a heated steering wheel, a power driver’s seat and dual-zone climate control. The GS Comfort package is needed for a sunroof and wireless cellphone charging and hookup. The Kuro is sold with a distinct colour combination and is the cheapest CX-5 with leather seating. The GT ups the features with adaptive headlamps, a lane centering device, a head-up display, navigation, ventilated front seats and a Bose-branded audio system. The Suna is a variant of the GT Turbo in a specific exterior colour and a terracotta-hued cabin. The range-topping Signature trim is enhanced with genuine wood trim, Nappa-processed leather seating, and a 360 degree camera system.
Above average reliability is expected. Unlimited mileage warranties are an interesting market proposition from Mazda and a real plus for high-mileage drivers. Turbo engines: Mazda’s last-generation of turbo cars (MazdaSpeed 3 and 6 and the CX-7) lacked durability and some turbo issues and manifold problems have been reported with the current generation turbo that debuted on the CX-9. An extended powertrain warranty recommended if you plan to keep the car past the five year powertrain warranty.
