Kia 2025
Our 2025 model year.
The base 2.5L, normally-aspirated engine is offered only in the base LX trim. The mainstream engine is a 2.5L turbo four that is quick, flexible and reasonably refined. The eight-speed, dual-clutch automated manual transmission works well enough under most conditions but can deliver some rough shifts in stop-and-go driving. The hybrid model is not particularly economical. The powertrain of the PHEV version doesn’t perform with the alacrity expected of 261 horsepower. Initial acceleration is strong but the powertrain quickly runs out of puff. The shift from full electric operation of gas-engine operation is very smooth, better than the transitions on Toyota hybrids like the RAV4. Ride is on the firm side but handling is sound as is handling braking. Good air conditioning but the Bose-branded audio system delivers mediocre sound.
The exterior styling of the Sorento is frill-free and sober. The cabin is elegant and has abundant space in the front two rows and competitive room for third row riders. Cabin materials are attractive enough but don’t give off a luxury appearance. Some occupants found the front seats uncomfortable on long runs. The voice command system the infotainment screen can be capricious.
With a full safety suite, heated front seats and a power driver’s seat, the base LX trim is well equipped. The EX adds the turbo four, a heated steering wheel, a foot-gesture operated tailgate and wireless cellphone charging. Buyers need to move up to the X-Line trim to get navigation, heated rear seats and a panoramic sunroof. Leather seating fans will have to step up to the X-Line Limited which also includes a digital gauge package, a Bose-branded audio system, ventilated front seats and a power passenger seat. Conventional Sorentos can arrive within a month of so but delivery times for the hybrids are so long that they aren’t really available in normal market terms.
Unproven engines. The dual-clutch transmission in the turbo 2.5L models has been reliable this far but the same transmission in the new-generation Hyundai Santa had significant failures with some vehicles being bought back. Leasing is recommended to avoid out-of-warranty major component failures.
