Kia K4 2025
The K4 replaced the Forte in the Kia lineup.
The K4 replaces the popular Forte compact car in Kia’s lineup. Built on the same platform as the current Hyundai Elantra, the K4 is longer and wider than the Forte. According to Kia Canada, the platform is also shared with the Niro.
Like most other Kias, the new K4 is very attractive. The clean and unadorned lines offer a compelling visual tension, and the few applied trim pieces are attractive. Only the sedan has broken cover so far but generally Kia offer a hatchback body style in conjunction with the sedan.
Inside, the driver faces a wide computer tablet that is connected to a chunky, rectilinear dashboard. Many routine functions are handled by the screen but fortunately a few physical buttons remain. The rest of the cabin looks very chic.
Two familiar Kia engines return, a 2L four rated at 147 horsepower, and a 190 horsepower 1.6L turbo four. The sole transmission offered is a CVT. Though many rivals in the compact car segment now offer optional all-wheel drive, it has not been announced for the new K4.
With heated front seats, L.E.D. headlights, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, junction turning intervention, a lane keep assist system and a driver attention warning, the base LX model is nicely equipped but at nearly $27,000, it is priced way beyond what buyers have been used to paying for an entry-level trim. Moving up the EX trim, which adds alloy wheels, door mirror door signals, a heated steering wheel, air vents for rear seat riders, lit vanity mirrors, wireless cellphone charging, two extra speakers and blind spot and rear cross traffic monitors, is a bit overpriced. The EX+ model adds a sunroof and an acoustic windshield and is reasonable value. Moving from the 2L engine to the GT Line includes a 1.6L turbo four as well as a multi-link rear suspension, larger wheels, sports seats, heated rear seats, a rear seat centre armrest, navigation and a dual-zone climate control system, at a very good price. The GT-Line Limited ups the equipment levels with a Harman-Kardon audio system, ventilated front seat and a memory system as well as a few minor features for a reasonable sum.
The K4 should exhibit average reliability during the warranty period but the 2L engine in mainstream models has a history of premature failure and the CVT transmission is unproven. Leasing would be a way to enjoy the car and avoid a major component failure after the warranty has expired.
