Hyundai Sonata 2025

Our 2025 review.

The Preferred trims have a small TFT gauge cluster but the hyper-premium N Line GT features a large and shallow digital gauge and infotainment array. Other controls are logical and  straightforward. Cabin materials on the top-spec model examined are well up to the standards of major competitors. Comfortable seats are installed front and rear and legroom is good for all riders. The low-slung roofline adds to the elegance of the new Sonata but makes getting in and out more difficult than it is in taller cars like the Toyota Camry. The 2.5L, normally-aspirated four is quick and quiet. It sends power to the front wheels or all four wheels via a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission. The top trim, the 2.5L turbo four N Line GT, is very quick. Power is sent to the front wheels with an eight-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

Only two trims, the Preferred, with a normally-aspirated 2.5L offered in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive and the N Line GT, powered by a turbocharged 2.5L turbo four sending power to the front wheels. The Preferred trim includes L.E.D. headlights, a panoramic sunroof, a full active safety suite including blind spot, rear cross traffic and active cruise control as well as comfort and convenience features such as leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel. All-wheel drive is a $2000 option on the Preferred trim. The N Line GT turbo lacks all-wheel drive and adds items such as rain-sense wipers, navigation, a Bose-branded audio system, alloy pedals, Nappa leather and more elaborate instrumentation but lacks ventilated front seats and a power passenger seat. The turbo model is priced $6600 higher than the Preferred front-wheel drive but when its additional content and higher performance are accounted for, it is good value.

Reliability should be average for the first five years. Unproven engines and a hardline attitude on the part of Hyundai in replacing engines that have failed prematurely make leasing for no longer than the powertrain warranty a wise move. Some complaints about failures of the eight-speed DSG transmission on the new-generation Santa Fe that is used in the Sonata turbo, but no complaints have been received about the Sonata as of early 2025.
