While Ford let some of their cars get very long-in-the-tooth, they keep the F-150 well up to date. The F-150 is unique in the pickup segment as it uses an aluminum structure. Ford offers a dizzyingly wide variety of wheelbases, cab styles and mechanical combinations.

The 2.7L-V6 turbo is the main engine for the vehicle but Ford offers a 3.5L-V6 turbo, a 3.5L-V6 turbo, a 3.5L-V6 turbo hybrid and a normally-aspirated 5L V8. The sole transmission is a 10-speed automatic.

The F-150 acquits itself well in heavy-duty activities like towing. That said, ride can be a bit turbulent when lightly loaded. Large windows mean good outward vision, augmented by the front door window apertures that droop down near the front of the doors. With the mainstream 2.7L turbo engine, the F-150 is more than quick enough and economical for a full-size pickup.

Conventional

Using the XLT crewcab as the base for comparison, four-wheel drive costs $3150. Moving up from the XLT SuperCab to the SuperCrew costs $1830. The base XL SuperCrew features a 2.7L-V6 turbo and is equipped with class IV towing capability, fog lights, rear parking sonar, a 12 inch infotainment screen, the Ford 360 Co-Pilot system with a forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot, rear cross traffic monitors and a lane keep assist system. A hybrid version is offered on the F-150. It costs $4575 on the XLT, but only $2500 on the King Ranch, Lariat and Platinum trims. The STX upgrade adds carpeting and cloth seats, the Ford Co-Pilot 2.0 system and painted (versus the black on the XL) bumpers. The XLT upgrade adds running boards, heated door mirrors and chrome bumpers. The Tremor trim includes the 3.5L-V6 turbo, power-fold mirrors, and skid plates for the transfer case, fuel tank, and front differential. Luxury enhancements include leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, real wood accents, wireless cellphone charging and a Bang & Olufsen audio system. The Lariat upgrade is enhanced by navigation, leather and Alcantara swathed Recaro seats, and a power passenger seat. The main additional features of the King Ranch trim are a dual-panel sunroof and a head up display system. The Platinum model adds fancier leather as well as Ford’s BlueCruise limited self driving suite.

Lightning

The very late introduction of the 2025 model precludes any pricing or product walk discussion. Quebec offers a $7000 rebate. The federal government is not showing a rebate for the 2025 model year but in 2024, the standard battery versions of the Pro and XLT could snag a $5000 rebate.

The turbocharged engines do not have a good reputation for durability. There have been some complaints of problems with the hybrid powertrain that there are no fixes for. The 5L-V8 would seem to be the best engine choice for the F-150.

Astonishing performance for a massive and super heavy vehicle. Two battery packs, the 98 kWh standard range and the 131 kWh extended range.
The standard range model has a range of 386 kilometers, with the extended range rated at 483 to 515 kilometers. The base battery pack produces 337 kW (452 HP), with the extended range battery pack rated at 433 kW (581 HP). Using the Ford Level 2 home charger, the base battery needs eight hours to charge, with the extended range battery pack needing 10 hours to recharge. Using a Level 3 charger, the truck can be charged from 15 to 85 percent 44 minutes. Properly equipped, the Lightning can tow up to 4536 kilograms (10,000 lbs). There have been complaints that towing greatly reduces range.
