An all-new hatchback that consolidates the A4 and A5 lineups.

The A4 and A5 were built on the same platform and suffered some unnecessary market overlap. Only a five-door hatchback has been shown so far for Canada, but a station wagon is offered in other markets and a coupe is likely to follow.

Power stems from the familiar 2L turbo four that is rated at 268 horsepower, seven more than previously. The new A5 lacks the mild hybrid system and 48-volt electrical system of its predecessor. The high-performance S5 variant is powered by the same 3L turbo V6 used before, it produces 362 horsepower, 13 more than previously. Power reaches all wheels via a seven-speed, dual-clutch automated manual transmission regardless of engine.

In a move that is certain to create confusion in the future, two generations of the A5 will be sold as 2025 models.

Even the cheapest A5, the unnamed base model, is at $57,700, very expensive. That said, it does include all-wheel drive, leather seating, alloy cabin trim, a glass roof insert, heated front seats and steering wheel, a TFT gauge package, navigation, auto dim interior and door mirrors and L.E.D. headlights, is very well equipped. Moving up to the progressive adds active cruise control, a 360 degree camera system, a head up display system and a Bang & Olufsen audio system, but is overpriced. the Technik range topper adds headlight washers, acoustic front door glass and a front passenger screen, but is significantly overpriced. Moving up the V6-engined S-prefix cars adds from $12,000 (Base and Progressiv) to $13,400 (Technik).

The A5 should be reasonably reliable during its first four years but will lack durability over the long term. Short, four year/80,000 kilometer powertrain warranty. Leasing for no longer than four years is recommended.
