Volkswagen Atlas 2024
Our 2024 review.
Built on VW’s variable MQB architecture, the Atlas is built in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The cabin is more attractive this year than previously, The seats are comfortable, space is abundant in the first two rows, with competitive room for third-row occupants. Cargo space is generous in two row mode and typical for the class when seven passengers are being carried. Only one powertrain, a 2L turbo four sending power to all wheels via an eight-speed automatic, is available. What the Atlas lacks in exterior styling and cabin ambiance, it more than makes for in terms of driving dynamics, room and comfort. The turbo four is flexible and sounds alright, but lacks the polish of the previous V6. The nicely weighted steering is precise and even offers a modest amount of road feel. The Atlas handles with confidence and delivers a supple ride. Braking is strong with good pedal feel and no lost motion when you request a stop. The audio system is a delight in the range-topping vehicle driven by the APA.
With alloy wheels, roof rails, deep-tint glass, L.E.D. headlights, active cruise control with stop and go, heated washer nozzles, wireless phone charging, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sense wipers, a three-zone climate system, digital gauges, auto dim rearview mirror, ventilated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a full active safety suite and an alarm system, the base Comfortline trim is comprehensively equipped. The Peak Edition adds some trim items like alloy scuff plates, bright accent pedals and a tonneau cover for the load area, but is significantly overpriced. The Highline trim includes leather seating, a panoramic roof, Harman-Kardon audio system, navigation, a power passenger seat and heated rear seats, and is good value. The Execline range-topper trim includes a 360 degree camera system, a head-up display, power-fold door mirrors, self-parking and upgraded leather and is priced to reflect the value of the content.
New model. insufficient data. Some complaints regarding poor transmission software leading to transmission performance and durability concerns. Predicted reliability is average for the first three or four years, declining after that.
Late cycle refresh for the Atlas for 2024. The previous V6 has been discontinued but the remaining 2L turbo four is now rated at 269 horsepower, 34 more than last year and only seven less than the V6. The 2L turbo still runs on regular gas despite the power boost. The exterior styling has been facelifted and the interior features some updates and more soft-touch surfaces. There is a new Peak edition.

What’s new this year?
The Atlas enjoys a surprisingly thorough update for a vehicle near the end of its product cycle. The base Trendline trim has been discontinued and a new Peak Edition has been added to the Comfortline model. The previously-available, smooth and punchy 3.6L-V6 has been terminated, with the sole engine being a 2L turbo four rated at 369 horsepower, 34 more than last year. The 2L still burns regular fuel. The exterior has been facelifted and the cabin is more luxurious with increased use of soft-touch surfaces. Renamed IQ.Drive, VW’s active safety suite is standard this year.
