Kia EV6 2024

Our 2024 model year review.

Built on the new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the Kia EV6, alongside the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are the first examples of a bevy of new Hyundai and Kia BEVs that will launch over the next few years. Kia has conceived its first E-GMP-based model as a crossover. A single 77.4 kW power pack powers all models. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive delivered via dual motor setup. Range is 499 kilometres for the long-range model and 454 kilometres for the dual-motor version of the long range. The high-power GT variant is rated at 351 kilometers. Kia notes that the EV6 can be charged using an 800 volt charger, a technology not generally available in Canada. The EV6 can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 73 minutes using the commonly available 50 kW, level 3 charger.

Unlike the retro-inspired Ioniq 5, the EV6 is clean, uncluttered and arrestingly modern. The rear styling treatment, with taillights visually joined by a light-bar at the top of the trunk, is quite appealing. The EV6 is marginally shorter overall than the Ioniq 5. The cabin of the EV6 is dominated by a large, rectangular computer tablet faces the driver. The tablet is formed in a shallow arc that makes the right side of the tablet more visible and physically accessible to the driver. The rectangle is split into two fields, a gauge package in front of the driver and an infotainment array at the far right side of the tablet. The rest of the dash has a strong horizontal emphasis. The liquid crystal display (LCD) “Integrated Controller” located below the screen, has two control modes which can be switched between climate and audio systems. Like Hyundai, Kia uses some recycled materials like polyethylene bottles and some plant-based items.

The base Wind trim includes L.E.D. headlamps, deep-tint glass, heated steering wheel, a heated power driving seat, wireless cellphone charging, an auto dim rearview mirror, a forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, active cruise control with stop and go, navigation, a lane keep assist system, and a driver attention warning. Moving from the rear-wheel drive Wind model to the all-wheel drive Land costs $2500. The GT Line 1 includes revised fascias, larger wheels, a power passenger seat, a power tailgate, a 360 degree camera system, ambient lighting, junction turn intervention and blind spot and rear cross traffic monitors and is excellent value. The GT Line 2 upgrade includes a sunroof, flush-mounted door handles, suede seat inserts, heated rear seats, a luggage blind, a Meridian-branded audio system a head-up display system and a Vehicle-to-Load feature that lets the car power an exterior feature, and is good value. The GT range topper offers 256 additional horsepower but costs $11,000 extra. EV6s qualify for a $5000 subsidy from the federal government and $7000 from Quebec.

Not rated, insufficient data. Few complaints have been received regarding this fearsomely complex car. Some battery pack failures reported on the related Hyundai Ioniq 5.
