BMW X3 2024
Our review of the 2024 model year.
Most X3s are powered by a 2L turbo four, with a 3L turbo inline-six, optional. There is a PHEV powertrain available as well. The sole transmission choice is an eight speed automatic. BMW’s static styling themes reflects a great self satisfaction within the company for its design vocabulary, but some pundits hope the propeller brand rehires former style Czar Chris Bangle to once again shake the firm out of its complacency. The cabin, with a pronounced horizontal emphasis, a standalone infotainment screen and small diameter instrumentation, is very BMW. There are some awkward accents, especially the shape of the bright alloy trim at the top of the dash centre stack. The quality of the cabin materials inside the X3 look upscale. The electronic joystick transmission selector is a tedious device. The X3 is a very roomy four seater and can accept a lot of gear inside its cargo bay.
Moving up from the 2L turbo four to the PHEV engine costs nearly $8300. Migrating from 2L turbo four to the turbo six costs over $16,000.
The Premium Essential package adds a panoramic sunroof and some minor items but is significantly overpriced as is the Premium Enhanced package. Most metallic paint colours cost $900, “Vernasca” leather is priced at $1900, with “Merino” leather costing $4250.
Predicted reliability is below average. Capricious electrical system can exhibit hard to diagnose problems. Oil leaks are common. Some complaints of oil sludge forming in the variable valve timing mechanism on other BMW engines. Oil changes should be done every six months or 8000 km, not at the much longer intervals recommended by BMW. Complimentary scheduled service for the first four years or 80,000 kilometers is standard. Some PHEV owners have reported near unsolvable problems with their vehicles. Short powertrain warranty. Leasing for no longer than the warranty is recommended.
