Volkswagen Tiguan 2023
Built on VW’s MQB architecture, the Tiguan for North America is is built on a 112 mm (4.4 inches) longer wheelbase than the Tiguans sold in other markets. Power stems from a 2L turbo four with 184 horsepower and a stout 221 lb-ft of torque, which reaches the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Instruments are located in a dashboard housing logical controls that will be familiar to Volkswagen owners. Attractive cabin components include soft-touch surfaces and luxury touches like flock lining for the door bins. The long wheelbase results in a very roomy cabin with impressive legroom for second-row occupants. Volkswagen offers a third-row seat but it really is just a catalogue line item, as space is minimal. Cargo space is ample when in two row mode, and next to nil if the third seat is deployed to accept passengers.
The 2L four in the Tiguan is sufficiently quick, and while not a paragon of smoothness, is quieter than before the 2022 update. The Tiguan is a quiet cruiser. The ride of the Tiguan is a bit firm around town but handling is tidy and its steering is nicely weighted and precise. Solid braking.
The base Trendline trim, with alloy wheels, Bluetooth, L.E.D. headlights, heated front seats, blind spot and rear cross traffic monitors, is nicely equipped. The Comfortline, which adds forward collision warning, including for pedestrians, autonomous emergency braking, a power driver’s seat, deep-tint glass, a luggage blind, wireless cellphone charging, wireless iOS/Android cellphone intercace and keyless go, is a bargain. The Comfortline R-Line Black adds a black-out trim package, a dual-panel sunroof and a variety of minor items and is reasonable value. The range-topping trim, the Highline R-Line, adds leather seating, with the front seats ventilated, a Fender-branded audio system, a power passenger seat and adaptive headlights, and is very good value. The third-row seat costs $800 on most trims. I
Average reliability predicted for the first four years. Turbo wastegate failures are becoming common on VWs and repairs are frightfully expensive. Expect some faults which develop on new VW models after they are launched.
