Mercedes-Benz GLB 2023
Though still based on the front-wheel drive-based junior lineup from Mercedes, the GLB jettisons the low-slung soft-roader looks of the GLA for a more serious and traditional crossover look. Built on a longer wheelbase, rear seat legroom, an issue with the GLA, should be acceptable for adults. Mercedes offers an optional seven seat GLB, but the third-row may be more of a catalogue line item than a place to actually locate passengers. Cargo space evaporates with the third-row seat deployed. The exterior styling is very squared rigged, looking a bit tall and narrow, like some of the Kei class cars from Japan. The cabin follows the themes first explored on the CLA and GLA, using the same long rectangular computer tablet in place of a gauge package, as well as the distinctive circular vents as its platform mate. Like its platform mates, the GLB offers the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), which is a Siri-style vocal concierge that responds to a “Hey Mercedes” prompt.
Most GLBs will be powered by a 221 horsepower 2L turbo four. An AMG variant, featuring a 302 horsepower version of the 2L, is also offered. Power reaches all wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission in all cases.
Like other versions of the junior Mercedes lineup, the GLB 250 is sold in a single trim with a variety of packages and single options that can be added to the car. Despite being an entry-level and one of the junior Mercedes lineup, this car is very expensive. The third-row seat is an $1105 option. Like other cars in the Mercedes junior lineup, a dual-panel sunroof, heated front seats and a power driver’s seat are standard. The Premium package adds an auto-dim rearview mirror and driver’s door mirror, ambient lighting and blind spot monitors, but is overpriced, as are the other packages. Leather seating is a $2105 option and metallic paint ranges from $975 to $2275. Genuine wood cabin trim is priced at $340, a heated steering wheel costs $325 and a power front passenger seat is priced at $550. The hyper-performance AMG 35 is priced $12,800 higher than the mainstream GLB 250. The GLB sells about 60 percent of what its GLA platform mate sells. About 90 percent of GLBs sold are powered by the mainstream GLB 250 powertrain, with the hyper-powerful 35 AMG variant accounting for 10 percent of sales. Those seeking the Burmeister sound system may be disappointed as components are short. At the beginning of 2023, there were some GLBs in stock and a custom order was predicted to take up to six months.
Not rated, insufficient information. Based on the latest version of the front-wheel drive junior Mercedes platform. These cars age poorly and the long-term prospects for this vehicle are not good. Predicted reliability is below average. Short powertrain warranty. The Mercedes scheduled service plans are recommended. If paying cash or financing, three services up to a 45 month period costs $1399, with four services over up to a 48 month period costing $1999. If leasing, three services over a 36 month period adds $25 per month to your lease, three services over a 45 month period costs $22 per month and opting for four services over a 45 month period adds $33 per month to your lease. If you are financing of paying cash for an AMG variant, three services over a 36 month term cost $2500 with four services over 48 months adding $3599 to the tariff. If leasing, three services over a 36 month term will add $36 per month to your lease with $59 per month for four services over a 45 month term.
