Honda CR-V 2023

Honda redesigns its popular Crossover SUV for 2023 and introduces a Hybrid powertrain.

Availability Notice: Traditional gas powered CR-V models are likely 6-10 months for delivery. Hybrids are likely 10-12 months.

Built on a 40 mm (1.6 inch) longer wheelbase, the new CR-V is 69 mm (2.7 inches) longer, the same height and a massive 85 mm (3.3 inches) wider than its predecessor. The previous 1.5L turbo four, still rated at 190 horsepower, returns as the mainstream engine. The new hybrid combines the efforts of a normally-aspirated 2L four with electric motors to produce 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. Unlike some competitors that have gone exclusively to all-wheel drive, the base CR-V offers a front-wheel drive variant. Drive reaches the wheels exclusively via a CVT. A full active safety suite, including a forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, a lane keep assist system, active cruise control, blind spot, rear cross traffic and lane departure warnings, is standard for 2023.

The CR-V is fronted by a gigantic truck-like grille to create an imposing look, with the side profile being a discreet and softer-lined tribute to the Volkswagen Tiguan. The rear styling of the new CR-V is very Honda but significantly less fussy than that of the last CR-V. Inside, the CR-V driver faces large conventional gauges in lesser models and crisply-marked TFT instrumentation in premium trims. Various Civic cabin themes, including the elegant, slick-acting HVAC knobs and vents hidden behind a Victorian-like grille, are present and cabin materials are impressive. Given an even longer wheelbase, cabin space should be even more expansive than before and the massive increase in width should open up space between the front passengers and deliver greater cabin width for more comfortable three-abreast seating in the rear seat.

With heated seats, remote starting, L.E.D. headlights and an alarm system, the base LX trim is nicely equipped. All-wheel drive is standard on all trims but the LX, where it is a $2800 option. The Sport trim adds a power driver’s seat, a heated steering wheel, a sunroof, a power tailgate and a number of smaller comfort and convenience items, at a good price. The EX-L trim features leather seating, an upgraded audio system, heated rear seats, a memory system, a power passenger seat, WiFi, wireless cellphone charging and front and rear parking sonars The Touring is offered only with the Hybrid powertrain. Of the $5500 price boost demanded for the upgrade, about $2000 can be attributed to additional equipment with the rest related to the hybrid system. Unlike Toyota, which cannot deliver a RAV4 hydrid in an acceptable time, Honda indicates that up to 50 percent of new CR-Vs will be hybrids and delivery times are quoted to be around six months.

Average reliability is predicted. The 1.5L turbo four has not been trouble free and the turbo and intercooler, covered only for three years/60,000 kilometers, is not part of the five years/100,000 kilometer powertrain warranty.
