BMW X3 2023

Most X3s are powered by a 2L turbo four, with a 3L turbo inline-six, optional. The sole transmission choice is an eight speed automatic. BMW’s static styling themes reflects a great self satisfaction within the company for its design vocabulary, but some pundits hope the propeller brand rehires former style Czar Chris Bangle to once again shake the firm out of its complacency. The cabin, with a pronounced horizontal emphasis, a standalone infotainment screen and small diameter instrumentation, is very BMW. There are some awkward accents, especially the shape of the bright alloy trim at the top of the dash centre stack. The quality of the cabin materials inside the X3 look upscale. The electronic joystick transmission selector is a tedious device. The X3 is a very roomy four seater and can accept a lot of gear inside its cargo bay.

With heated, power-adjustable front seat, power-fold door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, L.E.D. headlights, three-zone auto climate control, navigation and a power tailgate, the base X3 is pretty well equipped. The Premium Essential package adds ambient lighting, touch-activated unlocking and a large format sunroof, but is overpriced, as is the M Sport package. The xDrive 30e PHEV costs $10,690 more than a conventional X3 xDrive 30i this year compared with only $2000 last year. There is a $2500 rebate offered by Quebec but the federal government does not offer a rebate on the vehicle. Some reports received by the APA about unsolvable problems with some 30e vehicles urges caution. “Vernasa” leather seating is a $1900 option with “Merino” leather priced at $4250. Moving up from the 2L 30i to the six-cylinder M40i (branded M but not a real M) costs $15,100. 100 $. The M Competition, which is a real M, is priced $24,000 more than the M40i but includes the super-expensive Merino leather seating. Metallic paint is priced from $895 to $1400, depending on the hue. The majority of buyers lease and leasing is recommended to avoid high repair costs past the warranty. Except for the limited production M Competition variant, the mainstream X3 powertrains are available but there can be shortages of certain some options some of the time. As of early 2023, delivery times were quoted at about four months. Built in the U.S., the X3 will likely swerve the energy and supply problems that may hit Europe.

Predicted reliability is below average. Capricious electrical system can exhibit hard to diagnose problems. Oil leaks are common. Some complaints of oil sludge forming in the variable valve timing mechanism on other BMW engines. Oil changes should be done every six months or 8000 km, not at the much longer intervals recommended by BMW. Complimentary “scheduled” maintenance for the first four years or 80,000 km. Short powertrain warranty. Leasing for no longer than the warranty is recommended.
