2016-2020 Honda Civic models are covered by a 10-year warranty extension with no mileage limit from the original date of delivery for the replacement of the AC condenser in the event of a leak resulting from a defect in materials. This was a common problem reported to the APA on this generation Civic. Prior to this internal policy Civic owners and lessees were often told the repair was not covered because it had resulted from a road hazard.
According to Honda, “Tiny holes may develop in the condenser tube walls allowing the refrigerant to leak out… The program “does not apply to any vehicle that has a leaking condenser due to foreign object damage.” We reproduced images Honda prepared for its dealers that show how to differentiate a condenser defect from road-related damage.
The APA has begun to receive reports of condensers failing on 2021-2022 Civics. Please write us to share your experience, especially if the condenser was replaced at Honda’s expense either during or after the new vehicle warranty expired.
