Long-lead preview of the 2022 Ford Maverick pickup

By: Ron Corbett: APA Staff Writer

Though it won't go on sale until the end of the year, Ford of Canada recently made a pre-production version of the new Ford Maverick pickup available to the APA for a static examination.

The Maverick is the spiritual successor to the very popular, compact Ranger pickup that stopped production in 2011. While it looks like a traditional pickup, the unibody Maverick will drive like a crossover, giving people the look they want while avoiding the clunky driving dynamics of a traditional body-on-frame, live-rear-axle pickup.

This piece is essentially a pictorial overview of some of the very interesting aspects of the new Maverick. For full details of the new unibody pickup, please take a look at the  Lemon-Aid new vehicle reviews and also at the Early 2022 Model Preview.

Though it looks like a conventional body-on-frame pickup, the new Maverick has a unibody structure. Ford retains the traditional pickup styling cues buyers crave

The Maverick name is embossed onto the tailgate pressing

This tailgate position is the same height as the top of the wheelwells, allowing longer items, like 4x8 building materials, to be carried flat

The loadbed is 4.5 feet. The cargo fence/retainer is optional

Slots is the cargo bed will accept 2x4 lumber, letting owners fashion their own cargo restraint systems

The standard engine in the Maverick is a 2.5L, four-cyliner hybrid engine that makes 191 total system horsepower. Power flows to the front wheels exclusively via a CVT.  A 2L turbo four is optional, and is packaged with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive

Maverick dashboard features a retro-modern, avant-garde, high-contrast colour scheme

A touch screen, combined with knobs and buttons, easily controls the infotainment functions

Climate is controlled by knobs for fan speed and temperature, and buttons for air distribution. Two types of USB ports are available for those up front, and for those in the rear seat as well

Very stylish, high-contrast front door panel that contains multiple storage spots and water bottle slots. Note the "crinkled paper" motif above the armrest
